Auditing Efficience and Effectivenes

Auditing the organization's efficiency and effectiveness is now a key component of the internal audit mission. In an operational audit perspective, a control is deemed effective when it has been tested without exception. A steering process is efficient when it is executed as decided. But there are also higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness: That the organization as a whole performs its mission as intended, and that available resources are optimally utilized. But efficiency and effectiveness are also relative concepts.

Strategies for Deriving Maximum Benefit from Audit

The speaker will use real-world examples to demonstrate how working relationships between Audit and other assurance functions are often less than ideal, and how organisations can be missing out on the opportunity to get the most out of what is often a very skilled and experienced resource. He will use examples from practical experience to explore approaches and strategies for better collaboration between Audit, Security and Risk.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the key reasons that often adversely impact the effectiveness of audit, risk and security groups working together.
  • Recognise the significant impact organisational structure, culture, ethics and communications can have on the effectiveness of Audit, Risk and Security working together.
  • Identify the potential problem areas, warning signs, and pitfalls to avoid.
  • Strategically integrate audit into other assurance related activities as part of an enterprise wide risk approach.

Risk decision trees for managing risks
Risk management is often highly complex, resulting in misunderstood and therefore mismanaged risks.
This session will explain the concept of easy to understand “Risk Cards” (also called “Risk Decision Trees”) that can be used by experts and beginners alike. These cards can be applied to explain to management the risk-increasing factors and the need for mitigating controls - they are also useful to take risk decisions based on incomplete information. They are also especially valuable for planning (IT) audits in new areas.
The concept explained has been in use for many years in safety-related areas, where bad decisions can literally cost lives. The concept evolved over time and is easy to use, foolproof, tried and tested – but it’s up to you to fill in the correct information.

After completing this session, the participant will be able to…
• understand the interrelationship of risks and suitable controls
• be able to explain how easy risk management decisions should be to take
• design an IT risk management approach suited for beginners and professionals alike
• use the concept of “Risk Cards” (i.e. Risk Decision Trees) for explaining, teaching and managing risks
• and finally, use the concept of “Risk Cards” for Auditing of IT and Business alike

Memories of Future Past: The Rise of the Machines

In a not so distant future, machines will lead the way. They will provide guidance and will even have their own language -that we will not understand- to deal with situations. They will decide what is best for us… and for them. This is the era not for an evolution but for a re-evolution where machines will declare to have rights and govern a great deal of our digital (and physical?) life. We are living through times when we have to present questions about the limits of using bots, the risk perimeter of artificial intelligence and the challenges of machine learning. In that closer-than-we-think time, we have the unique opportunity to ask the right questions to the right individual… since, soon, those questions will be answered by a machine. Do you think that those machines would like to be turned off? Don’t you think that they will fight it? This is a new epoch: The Rise of the Machines.
